Attractions of Venice
The most popular place to visit in Venice is the
Piazza San Marco (Saint Mark's Square, also called the Piazetta) a
large open square. St. Mark's is the main meeting place in Venice
and is usually crowded by tourists and the pigeons. The
Piazza San Marco is one of the lowest areas in Venice and may
flood during high tide which occurs in winter and early spring. If
you dock at St. Mark's you will see two columns, one is topped by a
Lion of St. Mark and the other is crowned with Saint Theodore, the
patron saint of Venice. On the Piazza San Marco you will find
several museums, St. Mark's
Cathedral, the Campanile and the Doge's
Palace. The Piazza San Marco is
a public square and open year round.
The original structure of Campanile from the early 17th
century collapsed during repair work in 1902 and the present
structure was rebuilt in 1912. Visitors can climb to the top for a
nice view of the Piazza, St. Mark's and the Doge's Palace. The
Campanile is open year round and is the tallest structure in
Venice.
St. Mark's Basilica was built to house the relicts of St. Mark and
the saint's tomb. St. Mark's Basilica is one of the most unique
architectures of any church in Italy. The arched doorways have
replicas of four bronze horses welcoming the visitors to the
cathedral. Before entering the cathedral visitors should examine the
mosaics above the doors. St. Mark's is open year round.
Located in the Napoleon wing of the Piazza San Marco, visitors will
discover the Museo Correr. The Museo houses a good size collection
of Venetian art and artifacts dating from the medieval and
Renaissance times. Located in other major museums of Venice you will
see a lot of similar art pieces from the same area.
